Treat Headache With These Home Remedies!

A headache is pain or discomfort in the head. It usually accompanies various diseases and is known to be one of the most common ailments people experience.

Let’s have a look at a few common home remedies or ingredients we can use to treat headache from our kitchen.

Lemon: One of the possible reason for headache could be our body being acidic. The systems in your body (enzyme, immune, and repair mechanisms) work best when their environment is very slightly alkaline. Acid comes from cell metabolism and from food metabolism. Cell metabolism produces a weak acid, which can be eliminated by breathing. The acid from food metabolism is strong and needs to be buffered (combined with something alkaline) before it is eliminated. Most of the food eaten every day is acid-forming — pizza, burgers, French fries, soft drinks, fried chicken, donuts, potato chips, pretzels, candy, etc. High acid levels in tissues lead to irritation and inflammation, which your body translates into pain. Like a headache. Therefore, low acid levels in our tissues could lead to headache prevention. Though outside the body, lemon juice is acidic, Inside the body, when lemon juice has been fully metabolized and its minerals are dissociated in the bloodstream, its effect is alkalizing and therefore raises the pH of the body (pH above 7 is alkaline), thereby helping in maintaining acid alkaline balance in the body leading to relief inn headache.

Green tea: The main active ingredient of green tea in terms of relieving headaches is caffeine. Headaches are characterized by dilated blood vessels around the skull (blood vessels begin to dilate before the onset of a headache). Caffeine has a vasoconstrictive effect which causes blood vessels to constrict thereby relieving a headache. Caffeine also helps the body absorb pain relieving medications (like aspirin and acetaminophen) more quickly, allowing to feel relief sooner. Caffeine also blocks adenosine receptors present in brain which result in the release of pain causing [brain chemicals called] neurotransmitters, thereby helping in relief of headache.

Sugar: Headaches are a common symptom of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Glucose is our body’s primary source of energy. When we don’t have glucose readily available, our body can convert stored fat into energy to function, but our brain can’t use that type of energy as effectively as glucose. When our brain is starved for fuel, one develops a headache — it’s a biological reminder to eat and provide our brain with fresh energy. Sugar is a simple form of carbohydrate that are digested quickly and are easily broken down into glucose, providing instant energy to the brain thereby helping in relieving headache.

Water melon: One of the major cause of headache is dehydration, therefore, drinking water and eating foods that contain water helps in relieving headache. Watermelon is 93 percent water, therefore helps in recovering dehydration. Watermelon also contains magnesium and other essential minerals that are beneficial for headache prevention.

Research studies reveal that magnesium levels affect serotonin receptors (important neurotransmitters for controlling pain), and also have an effect on nitric oxide synthesis (found to be related to cause headache) and release, as well as on NMDA receptors—all brain structures and chemicals suspected to play important role in causing headache. Studies indicates, nitric oxide to be the earliest neurotransmitter activated in the cascade of events leading to a headache. Magnesium blocks the production of nitric oxide there by controlling headache. Magnesium is also intimately involved in the control of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors which play an important role in pain transmission in the nervous system and regulation of cerebral blood flow. Magnesium ion plugs the NMDA receptor and prevents calcium ions from entering the cell which otherwise leads to pain sensation.

Therefore consumption of watermelon provides water, magnesium and other nutrients thereby help in relieve headache.

So try out these simple home remedies for headache and have a stress and headache free life.
