Treatment for Ovarian Cysts

Treatment

In most cases, ovarian cysts disappear on their own without the need for treatment. The need for the treatment of an ovarian cyst will depend on the size of the cyst, the type of symptoms experienced and also if it is growing in size. The reproductive state of a woman whether she is premenopausal or postmenopausal is also taken into consideration while planning her treatment.

Treatment options

Watchful waiting – This is recommended in many cases owing to the nature of the problem. Most cysts disappear after a few weeks without any treatment. But periodic ultrasound may be advised.

Diet:

There are some natural ways to address this problem. It is often seen that many women have digestive problems like imbalance of good and bad bacteria in their body which acts like toxins. They promote formation of free radicals and trigger the growth of ovarian cysts. The following approaches may help prevent cyst formation, improve ovarian health and also provide relief in symptoms caused due to the cysts.

Include

Fruits: Variety of fruits should be taken on regular basis. They are a store house of nutrients – vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Minerals like potassium may help to shrink the ovarian cyst. Magnesium helps in relieving the pain and cramps. Vitamins like A & E are potent antioxidants and help to prevent cell damage by scavenging free radicals, thereby reducing inflammation caused by cysts. Vitamin B6 present in banana can help in hormonal balance.

Vegetables: Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, beetroot, dark green leafy vegetables are rich in phytochemicals and flavonoids which help in improving hormonal balance in the body.

Ginger and turmeric are natural agents to reduce inflammation. This helps to reduce pain caused by cysts.

Whole grain cereals– Oats, Brown rice, and multi grain cereals are rich in vitamin B. They are low glycemic index foods which avoid rapid absorption of sugar and help in toxin elimination from the body which helps in normalizing estrogen levels.

Omega 3- rich foods – Fish, nuts and oilseeds are rich in omega 3 which has anti inflammatory effect and also disrupt hormone imbalance.

Liquid: Herbal tea-stimulates blood flow to the pelvic area thereby reduces pain caused by ovarian cysts. Other fluids rich in vitamins and minerals are coconut water, barley water, wheat grass juice and Aloe Vera juice. These drinks have a good impact on digestive system and help in improving digestive upsets.

Vitamin D – Vitamin D helps in reducing insulin resistance. This helps to prevent poly cystic ovarian syndrome or multiple cysts on ovary. Exposure to sun is essential in getting vitamin D.

Avoid

  • Bakery products – Cakes, biscuits, pastries, pizza, patties etc. They are rich in trans fats which promotes inflammation.
  • Excess intake of caffeine – Caffeine is present in tea, coffee, chocolates, energy drinks etc. Limit the intake to 2 cups of tea/coffee. Excess coffee consumption has been linked to insulin resistance.
  • Additives, preservatives, chemicals – Avoid the use of packaged food on regular basis. Use of plastic containers should also be minimized. They may be a source of toxic chemicals which may affect your hormones.
  • Hidden sugar and junk food – Sugars such as cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup or sugary foods such as chips, chocolates, cookies, doughnuts etc. are refined foods. Such foods weaken the immune system leading to inflammation and growth of cysts. It may also increase the level of insulin in the body which can lead to hormonal imbalance in the body.

Lifestyle modifications

Weight management – Obesity is hazardous to health. Correction of weight helps to normalize hormone cycle. Excessive fat leads to insulin resistance and inflammation both of which pose a risk for ovarian cyst.

Stress management – Stress has a direct impact on hormone cycle. Prolonged stress can cause an imbalance in the hormones which can cause cyst formation. Stress can be managed by deep breathing exercise, relaxation techniques, meditation, laughter therapy, yoga, etc.

Exercise: Regular exercise helps to maintain weight, reduces fat, improves hormone cycle, and reduces stress and inflammation. This helps to reduce ovarian cysts and later prevents them. Besides this, muscle relaxation exercises also help to improve blood circulation in the body and help to overcome pain caused by cysts.

Smoking/drinking: Abstinence from alcohol and smoking helps to improve health. Drinking should be in moderation. As excessive alcohol may lead to hormonal imbalance which further may contribute to cyst formation. Complete cessation of smoking is important as it leads to free radical formation and inflammation, leading to cyst formation.
